English: In the annals of American spaceflight history, day one was 60 years ago today. On May 5, 1961, U.S. Navy commander Alan Shepard was the first American ever to fly in space, piloting the Mercury capsule Freedom 7 into the pages of history. Enjoy the scenes of the day that started the U.S.A. down the path to boots on the Moon, the space shuttle, the International Space Station, and all that’s still to come!
